Overgrown, inaccessible, and filled with debris, it sat quietly in the middle of the river. After Hurricane Ian, the condition only worsened, leaving the island even more damaged and overlooked.
Now, that same island is becoming one of the most interesting transformations happening in Fort Myers today.
For decades, the island remained untouched, more of a visual afterthought than a destination. Today, the City of Fort Myers is giving it a clear purpose. Legacy Island Park is being developed as a public waterfront space that prioritizes simplicity, nature, and access by water. This is not a traditional park with roads and parking lots. The entire concept is built around arriving by boat, kayak, or paddleboard, creating a completely different kind of experience right in the middle of the river.
What was once ignored is now being intentionally reintroduced as a place people will actually seek out.
The vision for Legacy Island Park centers around creating a calm, usable, and visually striking space without overdeveloping it.
Plans include walking paths that move through the natural landscape, docking areas that allow boaters to stop with ease, and open spaces designed for relaxing, gathering, or simply taking in the view of the downtown Fort Myers skyline.
Future additions are expected to expand the experience even further, with shaded structures, a small beach area, and rentals for kayaking and paddleboarding.
The defining feature remains the same. You can only get there by water.

The origin of Legacy Island Park goes beyond design plans and construction timelines.
In 2018, the city reached a settlement with one of Fort Myers’ founding families. As part of that agreement, the city committed to transforming the island into a public park. In exchange, it secured the ability to move forward with the development of the Luminary Hotel & Co. in the downtown area.
This connection ties the island directly to the broader evolution of Fort Myers. It reflects a balance between development and community investment, where growth is paired with creating meaningful public spaces along the waterfront.
Significant progress has already been made. The island has been cleared, the shoreline reinforced, and structural elements are in place for future docks.
The original goal was to open by mid-2025, but like many projects in Southwest Florida, timelines shifted due to hurricane recovery and funding delays. The project is currently moving forward as final grant funding is secured.
Once completed, Legacy Island Park is expected to attract a mix of locals and visitors who are looking for something different from the usual waterfront experience. A place that feels more intentional, more relaxed, and more connected to the river itself.
